DJ Cash Money Cubic Macau C

The place to be in Macau after the recent Lady Gaga concert wasn’t one of the splashy new casinos, but Cubic. We’ve mentioned Cubic a few times before, here and here. One of their strengths is that they bring top-notch d.j.s to Macau. Continuing in that tradition, on Friday the 28th they will feature DJ Cash Money, a pioneer Hip Hop d.j. from the U.S.

Cash Money is known to Hong Kong clubbers from his sets at Dragon-i over the last few years. He makes a stop again at the legendary club on Wednesday, before heading over to Macau on Friday.

Leon Lam Hien tattoo art

Any doubts about whether tattoos are works of art are quashed looking at the work of artist Leon Lam-Hien. I’ve never seen contemporary art translated so powerfully to skin before. While some tattoos are clearly masterful, it’s rare to spot tattoos that evoke modern art so vividly.

This Friday and Saturday, shoppers at the Diesel flagship store in Central have a chance to meet Leon Lam-Hien and have him customize their newly purchased Diesel jeans. To qualify, shoppers must purchase any piece from the Fall / Winter denim collection. While supplies last, they also will receive a copy of local musician Phat Chan’s book, “Tat Addicts“.

Does it get any better than that? Yes it does! (more…)

My Checker Box Hong Kong

An updated, more stylish version of the “compartment store” has recently arrived. My Checker Box, located just a block away from Elizabeth House in Causeway Bay, provides a shopping thrill similar to browsing capsule toys. (For those of you unfamiliar with them, capsule toys are sold in clear plastic bubbles from vending machines.)

My Checker Box’s ground floor location, rare for this sort of shop, is a large 1900 square feet. Instead of a single owner, compartment shops typically rent out small cases of varying sizes to potentially over 100 different want-to-be retailers. The interior of the store includes modifiable compartments so that renters can create a tailored fit for their inventory. It’s up to the individual tenant what kind of merchandise they’d like to sell in their box.

The space is well lit, and features an interesting design both inside and outside the shop. Part of what makes the place attractive is that the items for sale (in clear plastic cases,) become part of the design. (more…)

Rafik Pimpin Aint Easy Hong Kong

Pimpin’ Ain’t Easy, a monthly night that champions new styles of dance music is celebrating their first anniversary on Friday, August 7th. Over the course of one year, the somewhat under-appreciated party has brought over a dozen up and coming international d.j.s to Hong Kong.

P.A.E. has also filled a niche in the city’s nightlife landscape. Where other clubs such as Dragon-i and Volar bring major names, P.A.E. showcases rising talents who are just beginning to make waves on the global scene. (more…)
