fake comme des garcons shirt

It appears that clothing counterfeiters are developing more sophisticated tastes. Instead of copying t-shirts and sweatshirts by brands such as A Bathing Ape, there’s been a trickle of fake Comme des Garcons clothing making its way into the city’s sample stores. (more…)

Hong Kong 80s disco HK

Imagine walking into a club in Hong Kong and spotting Andy Warhol, Madonna, or Sylvestor Stallone sitting there. What about going to your favorite nightspot and being able to catch Run-DMC or New Order? Back in the 80′s, Hong Kong’s discos were wild playgrounds where local personalities rubbed elbows with top international superstars.

The decade that gave birth to big hair, shoulder pads, and great music, was also a time when a new style of nightlife began to flourish. (more…)

Xiao Tian Gu address

I’ve wanted to try the desserts at Xiao Tian Gu (小甜谷) for a long time, but until last weekend, I’ve never had the perfect occasion. Every time I pass by, the place is bustling with people.

Located along the back alleys of Tung Lo Wan Road, in the Tai Hang neighborhood, Xiao Tian Gu is sandwiched between Causeway Bay and Tin Hau.

Until recently, this area’s been a backwater filled with small auto repair shops and not much else. Because this neighborhood’s been left out of the massive high-rise development that’s reshaped much of the city, it has a special quiet charm. (more…)

fake Banksy painting repro
Why is this man trying to block my photo?

I was walking through Temple Street Night Market tonight, a spot known for souvenirs and knock-offs, when I noticed something new. As I passed by a stall that normally sells copies of posters from old Shanghai and canvases by Mainland artist Yue Minjun, I saw a different artist on display. (more…)

Diesel Hong Kong art Cultivate

Diesel is known for working with young, cutting-edge artists, so why are they holding a show featuring a man now in his 90′s?

In CULTivate, a new exhibition opening on Friday, Diesel brings together artists whose work spans: illustration, fabric-art, mixed media and murals. In some ways, artist Lo Koon Chiu sticks stands out like a square peg. (more…)

Standing at the top of Lan Kwai Fong, watching the wind whip the rain down the famous nightlife street. Believe it or not, a few places were still open, as was Tsui Wah in Causeway Bay! ;)

Diplo Aoki Hong Kong DJ

Mark your calendars, this is a dance floor dream-team if there ever was one! I’ve been waiting to catch Diplo for many years. He’s played in Shanghai, but never in Hong Kong. Volar and CLOT had both been interested in bringing him previously, but scheduling difficulties kept it from happening. Steve Aoki shouldn’t need much of an introduction. He’s played at Volar before, and also d.j.ed the Adidas Anniversary mega-event.

Combining these two talents in the same club is going to be dangerous! (more…)

Delay No Mall DNM

Delay No Mall opened last December, transforming a previously untouched corner of Causeway Bay into a two-story shopping center loaded with personality.

Commissioning local artists to create displays, and featuring exclusive brands found only under their roof, the mall was an ambitious undertaking. Fast forward to today, Delay No Mall is closed, the large space being subdivided and re-purposed. What happened? (more…)
