HK Halloween Hong Kong lines

Lines! (Or ‘queues’, for you British English speakers.)

Here’s the scenario:

You get all dressed up and head out to Lan Kwai Fong (the epicenter of Hong Kong’s Halloween celebration,) but instead of being able to join the party, you have to walk slowly through check points for thirty minutes to an hour, with throngs of people not even in costume!

Do you know how we spell that at Hong Kong Hustle? L A M E!

Last year we talked about the long, long lines, this year, we’re talking about two parties that are outside of the lockdown area, so you can have a good time immediately, and completely avoid the circuitous march. (more…)

Charles Munka Ques 88mph

The Embassy
features another opening for the second week in a row. This time around it’s a show of paintings titled “88MPH” by artist Charles Munka (aka Ques.)

Born in France, but now living in Hong Kong, Charles is an example of the positive way in which like-minded people can collaborate no matter where they’re located (thanks to the Internet!) As Rakim once said: “It ain’t where you from, it’s where you at!”

Having met the people online who would later form the Brainfeeder Record label, Charles has had success creating artwork for their releases.

You can preview a small gallery of his artwork here.

Please note that the event is one day earlier than originally scheduled. It’s on Friday the 16th starting at 7pm.

We’ve written about The Embassy before, if you’d like more info on the unique art space click here.

DJ Sinden Hong Kong Volar HK

I’m still amazed at the level of talent that comes to Hong Kong these days. For so many years we had no interesting names passing through, and now we have attractive nightlife options every month, if not every week.

D.j., producer, and remixer Sinden falls into this category. A well known name to fans of dance music, his songs are the kind of thumping catchy beats that d.j.s drop at prime time. Though a relatively new talent, he’s put out a large number of quality songs. (more…)

bubble tea lai cha Hong Kong

If you don’t know what bubble tea is, we’re talking about something you need to try! It goes by various names in English and usually includes a few of the following words: frothy Taiwan-style pearl tapioca milk tea! In Cantonese, there are a couple of names, but the most common is pronounced something like ‘zun (rhymes with gun) ju lai cha’. (Say it fast enough and it won’t make a difference!)

Ten years ago there were bubble-tea places all over the city. Walking around Hong Kong, a few could be found in every major neighborhood. But last year when I had a craving, I had to criss-cross the city just to get a tea. What happened? (more…)

Tangled the art of hair show

Here are two back-to-back art openings that may be interesting. The first, titled “Tangled,” takes place this Thursday in Central and features six artists united under the theme of hair! The venue? A hair salon on Glenealy Street.

The second exhibition, titled “Panic in Chai Wan,” features French-born artists L1ES ONE and YAZE, who both have graffiti influences in their work. The venue for their show is The Embassy, a large art space in Chai Wan Industrial City. (more…)

Diesel Heartschallenger store shop

In high-rent cities like Hong Kong, where having a cool shop location is extremely cost prohibitive, Heartschallenger has come up with a unique solution.

Parked on the streets of New York, Los Angeles or Miami you might spot one of their iconic pink ice-cream trucks. What’s inside is actually a mobile shopping experience that includes limited-edition clothing along with toys, candy, music and ice-cream. (more…)

DJ Steve Aoki Hong Kong HK

Steve Aoki takes the D.J. as Rock star thing to entirely new levels. His antics are masterful at inciting the crowd. From his hair-flinging and head banging to crowd-surfing, he transforms the audience into his own personal cult for the evening.

The crowd at Dragon-i last Saturday didn’t need much convincing. It seemed as though they arrived specifically to play their part. Even from the earliest moments, the audience was enthusiastic and willing. (more…)
