Swedish brand Monki held an opening party for their first retail shop in Asia on Wednesday night. Their Hong Kong store is located right next to H&M, in the Langham Place shopping mall in Mongkok. The turnout for the opening was huge, and the packed store was a jungle of people literally clutching armfuls of clothes.

Monki offers a killer equation – H&M prices for clothing that’s quirky and stylish. The brand describes itself as a mix between “Tokyo street style and crisp Scandinavian looks.” Whatever it is, it totally worked! (more…)

Silly Bape Thing, the collaboration between Japan’s A Bathing Ape and Hong Kong’s Silly Thing, celebrated the launch of their new clothing line last Friday night. The joint venture seeks to channel the early mystique of A Bathing Ape by updating and re-releasing several of their classic pieces.

To mark the occasion, the two label founders, Nigo (Bape,) and TK (Silly Thing,) presided over a packed party on the Hong Kong waterfront.

The well-attended event featured d.j. sets by Kan Takagi and Nigo himself. (more…)

Puma put on an amazing concert last Friday night, bringing out local bands LMF, Hardpack, and Endy Chow, to celebrate the Puma Archive line. The party took place in a raw, almost warehouse-like space, just a block from the Kwun Tung MTR station.

Despite the fact that the event began during an intense rainstorm, the turn-out was not effected. In fact, by the time I arrived (soaked!), the place was filling up quickly. (more…)

Laidback Luke Dragon i Hong Kong

Though he makes the rounds at some of the world’s biggest, most high-profile clubs, Laidback Luke has more of an underground music sensibility. It shows through in his remixes. He takes both little-known and mainstream tracks and makes them better by morphing them into hard-hitting, prime-time dancefloor killers. (more…)

G Shock Subcrew Hong Kong watch

Sometimes all it takes is doing things a little bit different to have a great event. Last week’s Subcrew / G-Shock party, held on a 500-person boat was creative, fun, and a major success!

Combine a cool local crowd with a new atmosphere, good music, (and plenty of free drinks,) and one of the most sweltering nights of the year turns into one of the best recent events. (more…)

milk tea champagne tsui wah HK
Order a milk tea champagne!

There are two Hong Kong companies that continually impress me. One of them is Lane Crawford (they seem to do everything right!) and the second is Tsui Wah. A few months ago, Tsui Wah added a brand new drink to their menu. It’s fun, smart, and perfectly suited to Hong Kong.

Called milk tea champagne, it arrives at your table in a bottle wedged in a bucket of ice! The drink combines two local favorites, Hong Kong style milk tea with the city’s predilection for champagne. (more…)

california hong kong lan kwai fong1

Sometimes it’s just plain sad to see things go. Although there’s not much room for nostalgia in this fast-paced, land-scarce city, certain places have been around for so long that you think of them as landmarks and it’s difficult to imagine them ever leaving. The demise of California Tower and the California Entertainment Building in Lan Kwai Fong, both cornerstones of Hong Kong’s nightlife since the early 80′s is one such case. (more…)
