Deathstar, no. Apple Store? Maybe!

Could the new Hysan Place shopping center be the address of the first official Apple store in Hong Kong? Located at 500 Hennessy Road, just across from Sogo, Hysan Place occupies the former site of Hennessy Centre.

The older complex, which housed the Japanese department store Mitsukoshi, was forty-one stories tall, but lacked a good layout for retail space. Hysan, the leading property developer in Causeway Bay, dismantled the old building, and has rechristened the location Hysan Place. (more…)

DJ Spinna Hong Kong Dragon i HK

Legendary music man D.J. Spinna, christens the new sound system at Dragon-i on Tuesday night. The talented New York-based producer is respected equally in both Hip Hop and House circles as a top remixer and beatmaker.

Spinna’s known for his soulful sounds and has been sought out to remix everyone from De La Soul to Michael Jackson. A d.j.’s d.j., luminaries such as Kenny Dope and DJ Scratch spun at his birthday party last month in New York. (more…)

Downwell79 Koga Freedom Chicken

Japanese d.j. / producers, Koga and Freedom Chicken will be taking over the decks at Philia Lounge on Saturday night. The two play a wide range of musical genres covering Soul, House, Techno, and Hip Hop, to name just a few.

DJ Koga spent nine years in New York, eventually establishing himself under the Jazzy Sport Brooklyn moniker, and playing at venues such as APT. Together with Freedom Chicken, the two have a long list of remixes and mixtapes that have garnered them a significant rep in Japan. (more…)

Unfathomable 2020 Dreams – Sonya Fu

One of the standouts of the recent 20/20 exhibition at the Above Second Gallery was a work by Hong Kong artist Sonya Fu. Titled, ‘Unfathomable 2020 Dreams’, it had a kind of sfumato quality to it that stood out from the other works in the show.

Using a digital painting technique, Sonya’s piece was able to simultaneously possess the warmth and earthiness of traditional painting, with the precision of digital art. (more…)

Mastamic mixtape hong kong

Charismatic local M.C., MastaMic is launching his ‘New Hope’ mixtape on Saturday, February 19th, at The Fringe Club in Central.

The last time we caught MastaMic, he was performing on stage with Southern China’s top Hip Hop crew, Dumdue.

One of the most creative underground M.C.s in Hong Kong, MastaMic is also known as the city’s Cantonese-language freestyle champion. In addition to his lyrical skills, MastaMic has a strong stage presence and puts on fun shows. On Saturday, the local M.C. will be performing several songs from his mixtape live at The Fringe. Chinese new year hong kong rabbit

Every year well over a hundred thousand people cram into Victoria Park for the Chinese New Year fair that packs several football fields of space.

Throngs of festive revelers slowly press their way through long rows of booths, browsing and interacting with hawkers. The lively atmosphere is a unique Hong Kong experience as sellers shout and carry on, attempting to draw attention to their merchandise.

The items on sale include plants and flowers meant to bring good luck in the new year, as well as merchandise that corresponds to the coming year of the Chinese zodiac.

But other non-traditional categories also exist and are particularly popular. (more…)
