Skerrit Bwoy’s first performance at Volar was truly legendary. At one point in the night, performing as hype-man for Diplo’s Major Lazer Tour, he climbed onto a water pipe and hung upside down from the ceiling while the crowd went wild.

In town for just 36 hours, London-based artist INSA has succeeded in creating a new work in his ‘Girl On Bike’ series. The requirements of the series force him to locate a wall, paint it, find a bike, and discover a model, all within a brief duration of time. The resulting work gets turned into a limited edition print which will be on sale at the exhibition’s after party on Thursday night, August 18th, at FLY. (more…)

Hot Japanese brand SLY is holding a party titled Cat Girl Glamour on Thursday night at KEE Club. For the occasion they are having veteran DJ Dee Montero, formerly of Renaissance and Pacha in Ibiza, headline the night. Also on the wheels is Mr. Ivan Sit, one of Hong Kong’s well known soulful music fanatics.

Although, somewhat lesser known than some of their Ed Banger labelmates, DJ Feadz and Riton are both talented DJs, producers, and scholars of dance music. Feadz is the one who discovered Uffie, putting together her hit “Pop The Glock”.

His dense productions contain bits and pieces from earlier eras of dance music history. From obscure Chicago Hip Hop House to 90′s Techno classics, he deconstructs and reassembles, creating something intense and altogether new. American basics retailer, The Gap will be opening their first store in Hong Kong in November. Just around the corner, Abercrombie & Fitch are taking over Shanghai Tang’s space in the Pedder Building, paying $7 million a month in rent. The Queens Road Central area is fast becoming crowded with large, mid-priced retailers.

Despite its high foot-traffic location (on the former site of Queens Theatre,) The Gap may face a more difficult time attracting attention. As a provider of everyday casual wear, the brand faces competition from a medley of labels already entrenched in the neighborhood and throughout the city. (more…)

Imagine my surprise, walking around the capital of Sichuan province seven years ago when I stumbled upon an authentic Reggae bar with great music. I remember thinking – I wish Hong Kong had a place like this!

Unfortunately, the city’s high rents have often kept less mainstream music genres from finding a permanent home. To combat this gap, promoters and dj crews have sprung up to organize special nights and parties. Recently, Hong Kong’s Reggae scene seems to be experiencing an upswing. (more…)
