Volar’s back!

Six months ago there were rumors that Volar, one of Hong Kong’s top clubs was going to close. Not only did the club not close, it recently won best dance club in two Hong Kong publications. If the past few weeks are any indication, Volar is back as strong as ever.

This last weekend featured Wild Obsession, a party from Germany helmed by d.j. Sebastian Serrano. Sebastian is one of those d.j.s that’s hard to photograph since he’s jumping around to the music and constantly mixing. Luckily I’ve honed a special approach for this type of performance and developed a few skills of my own.

I actually first heard Sebastian on Thursday night when he took over the turntables at Volar for a brief d.j. cameo. His high-energy approach was contagious and had a number of people totally rocking. Amplify that times ten and you can picture the scene at Volar on Friday night. As you can see in the photos, the place was jammed.

Despite a large number of new nightlife venues in town, Volar and Dragon-i (which is even older,) continue to thrive. Saturday night at Dragon-i had Shejay’s d.j. Kellilicious from London in the booth.

Wednesdays at Dragon-i also remain untouchable and with guests like David Beckham popping into the place, the legend of “D.I.” continues.
