Hong Kong food stall awning

There are a few cool cut-away views along the Central to Mid-Levels Escalator that make for interesting photos. I was walking down the pathway yesterday when I looked to my left, somewhere between Wellington Street and Queens Road.

The alley below contains outdoor food stalls, but all you can see is a patchwork of colors from the ramshackle umbrellas they use to protect their tables. Having just rained, the view was particularly vibrant and stunning. As far as the eye can see you have a collection of different awnings and tarps strung together.

Hong Kong is filled with such scenes of unintentional beauty. (more…)

Sniper Richie Jen Huang Xia

The past week has been a blur of films, receptions, after-parties and late night snacks. Hong Kong has been the epicenter of the Asian film industry, hosting four major movie events simultaneously.

In addition to the Hong Kong International Film Festival, and the Asian Film Awards (which was held on Monday night,) the four day Filmart and HAF film financing forum have just finished up.

During this period there have been several notable film launches. Wednesday night was the premiere of Hong Kong director Dante Lam’s new film, The Sniper. Starring Richie Jen, Huang Xiaoming and Edison Chen, the picture was originally scheduled to be released last year.

How did it turn out? (more…)

Pimpin Aint Easy Hong Kong 1

Friday night marks the tenth edition of Pimpin’ Ain’t Easy, a monthly night at Cliq showcasing contemporary underground club music. D.J. Miss Yellow, a frequent guest d.j. for the party, will be performing as well as celebrating her birthday during this installment.

D.J.’s Kid Fresh and Enso, the organizers of the night, will also throw down sets in the main room.

A special added attraction, the night’s event will be a two-room extravaganza featuring DJs in both sides of the club. DJ Ryan Li and friends will be holding down the Hip Hop room. It should be an exciting night with some great H.K. based talent.

Adidas 60th anniversary Hon

Thursday I ran into six different friends who each asked me the same question: “Are you going to the Adidas party tonight?”

Lovefoxxx, the fashionable lead singer of Brazilian Indie-Electro Rock band CSS hits Hong Kong for a special DJ set at Volar on Saturday, March 14th.

The music of CSS (which stands for Cansei de Ser Sexy) is at the intersection of Indie Rock and Electro, right in line with what’s been happening in cool circles the last three years. If she d.j.s the type of music she makes, you can expect catchy songs and great energy.

There is also the potential for dance floor frenzy as Lovefoxxx is known to body-surf the crowd! I’m there!

For a sample of Cansei de Ser Sexy’s (CSS’s) music, check out their MySpace page.

Have a look at this video of Lovefoxx at home. Her creativity is apparent!
