Free The Robots, set to headline a party organized by BOOM Magazine on Thursday, June 25th, is part of a small circle of L.A. based musicians at the heart of a thriving beatmakers movement. Comprised of names like Flying Lotus, Gaslamp Killer, Nosaj Thing, TEEBS, and Samiyam, California is producing an abundance of brooding, heavy beats.
The party promises to be an exciting night. Free The Robots is known for his live sets filled with improvisation. Utilizing the turntables as well as a sampler, he constantly triggers snippets and scratches. For a quick listen of what to expect, check out the video below.
Roam Elsewhere, who will also DJ at the event, is likewise an influencer in the L.A. scene. As co-founder of OBEY Records, he has released music by Public Enemy, DJ Shadow, A-Trak, Z-Trip, and The Gaslamp Killer. Partnering with Free The Robots to found OBEY Radio, the duo have toured around the world, playing in diverse cities such as Moscow, Sao Paolo, London, and Seoul.
The venue for the event is Hong Kong’s indoor skatepark, Vans SK85ive2, which is located just a few blocks from the Kwun Tong MTR station. The alternative spot, far away from the glitz of Hong Kong’s Lan Kwai Fong nightlife area, is an ideal place to experience underground sounds.
