Grandmaster Flash TonyHumph

Saturday night Tony Humphries hits Dragon-i for the first time. He’s truly a legendary d.j. who has been a top name in the club scene for over twenty years! A career like that spans many trends and multiple genres of music. If individual songs are like words in a d.j.’s vocabulary, this guy must be an eloquent speaker. I believe he plays a different brand of House music than other d.j.s that have visited Hong Kong recently, and I’m excited to hear him play.

Talking about legendary d.j.s, they don’t come much bigger, or more important than Grandmaster Flash! Flash is back for his second appearance at Dragon-i. He’ll be behind the decks on Wednesday, October 3rd. I was out of town the last time he visited and this time I don’t want to miss it! I’m curious if he’ll play a combination set of classic Hip Hop, breaks, and new music, or what? Pioneers like Flash understand crowds and rocking parties better than anyone. Expect a big turnout.

Pinko fashion crowd

Italian clothing brand Pinko held what may have been Hong Kong’s highest fashion event last Friday on the 75th floor of Central Plaza.

Central Plaza is the city’s second tallest skyscraper and the highest reinforced concrete building in the world. The Apex, the event space located on the 75th floor, is unique not only for its view, but also for its futuristic atmosphere. Looking around the room at the web of beams surrounding the three story high windows, I couldn’t help but feel like I was inside the Deathstar from the original Star Wars movie! (more…)

Crowd Adidas party Causeway

Last year’s Y-3 fashion show was buried so deep in Kowloon-side, that even taxi drivers had a hard time locating the venue. Yet, despite the distant location and a huge warehouse space, the turnout was at over-flow capacity. In contrast, the Adidas Originals show on Thursday night was smack in the middle of Causeway Bay, one of Hong Kong’s high-traffic shopping and entertainment centers. Based on the circumstances I guessed that attendance would be extreme – and I was right! (more…)

Shanghai Tang Model Winter

Complex ethnic-influenced prints and curly-haired models were the signature of Shanghai Tang’s new Khotan Silk Road collection. The backdrop for the show was a desolate landscape from deep within the interior of China.

The fashion show drew a standing-room only crowd at Cuisine Cuisine in the IFC Mall on Wednesday evening. Bench seating provided the large turnout of VIP guests with a clear view of the runway as the models marched along to the beat.

Check out photos as well as video of the finale! (more…)

Qlub Club Qube

I’ve been watching the area on Wyndham Street across from Dragon-i change over the last two years. Where you used to find art galleries and Persian rug stores, you now find bars, concept restaurants, and lounges. Qube, a private club occupying a multi-story space on 41 Wyndham Street, is the newest addition to the block. (more…)

DJ Domination HK Reebok

After the Nike exhibit at 26 Degrees on Friday, I headed over to Club No. 9 for a Reebok event. I haven’t been to Club 9 in a long time and I was interested in seeing what Reebok had lined up. I didn’t hear anything about special guests beforehand, but during the night they rolled out a bizarre mixture of talent! (more…)

KEF Million Dollar speakers

I guess it’s more important what they sound like! KEF, a high-end British audio manufacturer held an event last Thursday to introduce Muon, a limited edition set of speakers made out of “super-formed” aluminum. The six-foot tall, curved metallic monoliths were created by the famed Ross Lovegrove, who is part student of nature, part industrial designer. (more…)

Nike Tech Pack BIO

Nike held a small event on Friday to showcase the new Nike Tech Pack collection. The venue was their new gallery / meeting space on U Lam Terrace, known as 26 Degrees. The party featured a photography exhibition by Rensis Ho, who shot fifteen individuals wearing Tech Pack gear. (Eleven out of the fifteen are friends of mine!) (more…)

BBC Ice Cream Shop HK

First of all, this isn’t the kind of ice cream that you eat! Ice Cream is a high fashion sneaker brand launched by Pharrell Williams (of the illustrious Neptunes,) along with Nigo of A Bathing Ape. Billionaire Boys Club is the street wear clothing collaboration between the two.

I walked past On Lan Street last night and saw the new BBC Ice Cream flagship store. It sort of snuck up on me in the middle of the block! The entire edifice of the building has been transformed into a rocket ship (one of the popular icons of the brand.) The sliding doors were working and the place was obviously undergoing some last minute tweaks before it opens on Saturday, September 15th.

This will be Billionaire Boys Club / Ice Cream’s second store, the other is located in Tokyo. My friend Sylvia ran into Pharrell last year while he was in town looking for potential locations. On Lan Street was a good choice. The small street has gone crazy recently with a Martin Margiela, Comme Des Garcons, Yasuhiro Mihara, a new Diesel shop, and a Visvim store just around the corner. The street was pioneered for high-end fashion by D-Mop and Deep Anger (currently located in Causeway Bay). The BBC / Ice Cream shop, should add a more youthful edge to On Lan Street.

Here are two more photos… (more…)

M 88 Wellington Street HK

Last night I stopped by the soft opening of Aura, a new club located on the sixth floor of M-88 at 2-8 Wellington Street in Central.

M-88 is an older building that was recently renovated and has sought to reinvent itself as an entertainment destination. The strategy behind re-branding the building ‘M-88′ is to make it more hip and youthful. (Sometimes the name game can backfire, for example, there was a building in Hong Kong that christened itself ‘Dot Com House’ just before the market crashed!) (more…)
