pimpin aint easy hong

Pedestrians walking around Hong Kong’s Central neighborhood can’t help but notice the strategically placed (and colorful,) Pimpin’ Ain’t Easy banners. I’ve counted at least three free-standing signs in high foot-traffic areas. Though in the past some clubs have went so far as to take out T.V. advertisements, this is an uncommon practice in Hong Kong. (more…)

Note the ‘X’ taped onto the doors in preparation for the typhoon!

I can always tell a typhoon day first thing in the morning. Even without watching the news or checking online, there’s an eerie silence in the neighborhood. (This is perhaps due to the lull in the incessant drilling that takes place nearly 365 days a year!) The only other time this silence occurs is during the Chinese New Year holiday.

Friday morning was one such quiet period. Confirming that there was indeed a typhoon, I stayed in for most of the day, finally venturing out around 11 pm. Despite the typhoon signal number 9, a time when there are barely any taxis on the road, and when both public and private offices are shut, many of Hong Kong’s nightlife institutions remained open.

Walking through Lan Kwai Fong, one of the main bar areas in Hong Kong, I decided to conduct a little research. What would the difference be between Friday and Saturday nights? See for yourself! (more…)

MTV Untold Stories contest

In the past two days I’ve been contacted by two groups: MTV and Sony BMG, both asking Hong Kong Hustle to help promote their contests. One of the contests involves remixing a song, the other, adding an ending to a short story that you can potentially make into a film.

Both of them require creativity which is why I’m going to showcase them here. (more…)

Hong Kong HK China Olympics

Who says Hong Kong doesn’t care about the Olympic games? Though the special administrative region sent its own separate delegation of athletes to the Olympics, Hong Kong people are proud of the grand opening ceremony and the chance to participate by hosting the Olympic equestrian events.

Saturday night foot traffic at Hong Kong’s busiest intersection slowed to a crawl as passersby paused to catch team China participate in an event. All over the city, screens from Jumbotrons down to those inside elevators were tuned to the games. (more…)

Amendment: This show was not affiliated with the artist, but was a private showing of several minor works by Murakami and three other artists. It was unsanctioned and not endorsed by the artist.

The Fabrik Gallery, the same people behind the first Banksy show are following up with an exhibition of artwork by Takashi Murakami. The Japanese contemporary artist, known for his colorful drawings, figures, and commercial savvy, is much sought after by international collectors. His work has attracted the likes of Louis Vuitton, who commissioned Murakami to add his artwork to a series of their bags. The connoisseur Kanye West is also known to sing his praises. (more…)

duke burger Hong Kong Soho

In the space of two years, Hong Kong has transformed from being a burger wasteland to a burger garden of Eden! Suddenly there are over 13 places that cater primarily to burger fans. Now the question is which place to choose?

Burgers, like pizzas, come in all different shapes and sizes. And like pizza, the taste of a
true great one can be ascertained by sampling something basic, like a regular cheeseburger.

When I get hungry for pizza, I’m craving mozzarella cheese and tomato sauce, I don’t want Peking Duck, so I don’t care about things like Peking Duck pizza. Similarly, when I’m hungry for a burger, I don’t seek out a foie gras burger.

Here’s my rundown of some of the prominent burger joints in town, with an emphasis on the new spots. Let the burger battles begin! (more…)

Decade of Love Hong Kong

Last night I checked out the premier of A Decade of Love, a film that was originally supposed to be screened as part of the Hong Kong International Film Festival back in March. Similarly structured to Paris, Je t’aime, the movie is a mixture of ten stories, each with a different director and cast. Every story centers around the concept of love.

How was it? (more…)
