LAB CONCEPT + American Apparel is back?

The property arm of the Lane Crawford Joyce Group is in the process of opening a sprawling network of shops called LAB CONCEPT in Admiralty’s Queensway Plaza. The free-flowing shopping area takes up 64,000 square meters and sits just across the sky bridge from Pacific Place.

Among the offerings now open are a large shoe and accessories area dubbed Shoespace, and a massive cosmetics section called Faces.

Turning a corner from one entrance, there are an assortment of clothing brands that Lane Crawford has previously championed, including Theysken’s Theory, Alexander Wang, Phillip Lim, Scotch & Soda, Rag & Bone and Opening Ceremony.

The selections here include items occupying a wide range of prices. American Apparel for example, seems more at home in this setting than it did in IFC.

LAB CONCEPT provides a curated shopping experience, bringing young, non-traditional labels that are having an impact on contemporary fashion, all under one roof.

Currently, the space looks between thirty to fifty percent complete. Large areas around the perimeter are still under development.

Why Queensway Plaza?

Although people may have written off Queensway Plaza over the years, as an outdated, down-market neighbor of Pacific Place, it occupies an ideal location. Queensway Plaza is not only a transportation hub with two MTR exits (C1 and C2), but it serves as a nucleus for a cluster of major office buildings.

There’s a massive amount of daily foot-traffic in the shopping plaza. Visiting the area on a Friday evening proved it to be buzzing with activity.

(Even selecting a less crowded time to film, people continually walked by!)

American Apparel returns!

An American Apparel section currently occupies a prime corner of LAB CONCEPT, with several signs indicating a larger presence in Hong Kong coming soon.

In addition to their temporary pop-up location at Queensway, it appears that American Apparel will soon be launching a dedicated Hong Kong online store.

(This is good news for all those who keep commenting on our earlier A.A. posts here and here.)

For Hong Kong, an online shop is a more sensible option over a flagship store, as the city’s rents just don’t make selling basics a highly profitable endeavor.

Worth a look!

(One bit of feedback – the name LAB CONCEPT is somewhat generic, as is the name shoespace” (even with the weird single quote.) More care should be taken to make the names snappier, instantly recognizable and brandable!)
