Undercover Jun Takahashi Gr

He’s baaack! Celebrated Japanese fashion designer Jun Takahashi will be in Hong Kong for the opening of a photography exhibition that also highlights the Spring Summer 09 Undercover collection.

What’s a Grace?

The last event Jun Takahashi presided over in Hong Kong featured a live puppet performance. You can read about that event here. It turns out that the creatures have a name and their story has evolved considerably. (more…)

La Loggia Agnes b flagship 1
Agnes B. La Loggia within the IFC shopping center

European and American luxury brands once viewed shopping malls as the opposite end of the spectrum. Malls were derided as down-market, lacking in ambiance, sterile, suburban, and without unique value.

But in order to reach their target customer most efficiently, they have had to compromise. Particularly in Asia, there are occasionally differences between the label’s vision of luxury and the shopping patterns of consumers.

One crucial area where this rift surfaces is in choosing a location for a flagship store. (more…)

Annie Lennox, the powerful voice behind the Eurythmics dance floor classic “Sweet Dreams Are Made of This,” will be playing a special unplugged set at the MO Bar on April 28th. The occasion is a fund-raiser for the SING campaign which is a charity she founded in 1997 to help HIV/AIDS infected women and children in South Africa.

MO Bar is small, cozy lounge on the ground floor of the newish Landmark Mandarin Oriental attached to the Landmark shopping center in Central. A minimum donation of $2000 HKD is required to receive an invitation to the event. All proceeds will be donated to the SING charity.

For more information about donations and ticketing, you may contact Elsie Leung from the Mandarin Oriental between 11pm and 5pm. Her email address is eleung@mohg.com or you may call 2132-0123.

On the night of the 28th, doors open at 7pm and close sharply at 8pm. No one will be admitted after the concert has begun.

cake dessert Hong Kong HK
Love at first bite! The signature Sift chocolate cake.

Sift, my favorite dessert bar in Hong Kong, just opened a new branch in Wanchai. Located on Queens Road East between Pacific Place Three and the Hopewell Centre, the new location focuses on take-away treats, offering a wide variety of delicacies.

Stepping into the shop and gazing at the scrumptious selections, the display was almost too much to handle! Though not hungry, I definitely wasn’t leaving empty handed! (more…)

Hong Kong concert band show

Last week I attended the Oasis concert at Asia World Expo. For those who have never visited, it’s just past the airport. Asia World Expo is one of the few venues in Hong Kong that can support a big live show. The place seems to be the only international-level concert hall in use recently.

Check out photos from the night and learn about one potential snag that could spoil your fun! (more…)

WordCamp Hong Kong Wordpres

Sunday morning I woke up painfully early and took the KCR train out to University station in the New Territories. My destination was the Science and Technology Park in Shatin, more specifically, an auditorium called the “time-capsule” (pictured above.)

What could possibly get me out of bed at 7:30 am on a Sunday morning (a time I frequently go to sleep!)? (more…)

Tsui Hark film movie HK

It’s difficult to overstate the importance of Tsui Hark’s Film Workshop to Hong Kong cinema in the mid 80’s thru 90’s. The company epitomized the magic and versatility of Hong Kong filmmaking. A list of their productions reads like a list of the best Hong Kong movies of all time.

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of Film Workshop, (a company formed by director Tsui Hark and his wife, the producer Nansun Shi,) the Hong Kong International Film Festival is curating a special exhibition at the Agnes B. gallery in Wanchai.

What’s inside? (more…)

HITEC rave party Hong Kong 1

Get ready to be transported back to a time of smart drinks and smoke machines! Friday’s installment of the monthly Pimpin’ Ain’t Easy party features two d.j.s with new mixes out that are heavily influenced by the early 90’s rave sound.

DJ P.O.L. Style, based in Tokyo, and DJ Drafus Chow, a relocated New Yorker in Hong Kong, are headlining Friday’s event.

Not familiar with D.J. Drafus? Perhaps you know him by one of his many d.j. pseudonyms! (more…)
