Damien Hirst – “For Heaven’s Sake”

When it comes to stimulating an interest in art, there’s no doubt that Hong Kong has made strides over the past decade. As evidence, one can simply point to the success of the art walk, the annual art fair, local malls’ obsession with art installations, or the notable art auctions taking place in the city.

Whether the new-found interest in art is derived more from a financial motive (say, art as an investment vehicle,) rather than an actual rise in connoiseurship, is irrelevant. The end result is that Hong Kong has been left with greater exposure to art and multiple venues to view work both in the public and private sector.

Yet perhaps nothing that has happened previously is as significant as next week’s opening of the Gagosian gallery in Hong Kong. (more…)

2020 20 art exhibit show hong kong 2010

An exhibition opening this Friday at the Above Second gallery asked this exact question to twenty artists from around the world. Each artist responded using a 40 x 40 cm space and a variety of different medium.

On Friday, July 9th, Hong Kong’s Above Second Gallery is launching an exciting solo exhibition featuring the artwork of MEGGS, a rising talent from Melbourne, Australia.

Having previously exhibited in Tokyo and London, the artist’s work often shows a masterful use of color and typography that can be traced back to influences including comic books, graffiti, and packaging design.

Simon Birch artist exhibit hong kong

Simon Birch, an artist we have covered extensively on Hong Kong Hustle, is launching an ambitious new exhibition titled Hope and Glory on Thursday, April 8th.

The show will be spread out over 20,000 sq. feet – an enormous size in this land-scarce, densely packed city. (Some of you may already be familiar with the ArtisTree space as it was the site of last year’s excellent Vivienne Westwood retrospective.)

This show is billed as a “conceptual circus” and seeks to immerse the attendees in a multimedia experience. Although known primarily as a painter, Simon has experimented with additional art forms including sculpture, film, and even performance art.

Wu Yue Will Barras art Hong Kong

Answer: An art exhibition titled “Wham Bam, Thank You M’am” opening in Hong Kong!

Thursday, February 25th, marks the launch of Above Second, a new art gallery in Sai Ying Pun. Above Second is christening their space with a show by Wu Yue, a Paris-based illustrator who has worked with diverse personalities including Kid Cudi and Lebron James.

The exhibition is a collaboration with gallery co-founder, Jasper Wong. Jasper’s known for his use of the color pink, as well as for inserting Mr.T and Superman into his artwork. This should be interesting! (more…)

Untitled Enemies art Apostrophe HK

Untitled Enemies,” the new show by the Apostrophe Gallery, is opening up at The Peak Galleria this Wednesday. The exhibition includes work by a diverse group of artists including six from Hong Kong and seven from England, Australia and the U.S.. (There are a total of twenty-five contributors altogether!)

The collection boasts a wide variety of styles – but what’s the significance of the name – “Untitled Enemies”? (more…)
